In Living Color: The Art and Science of the Coastal Landscape

Joseph Ingoldsby has returned to a source of inspiration within the coastal
landscapes of Cape Cod to install a series of works which examine
photosynthesis in plants from emergence, growth, seeding, senescence, and
death using the color and the pattern of the landscape mosaic to define the
sequence. In Living Color includes Landscape Mosaics, Requiem for a Drowning
Landscape and Anadromous Awakening.

Nutrients, water, oxygenation, salinity, topography, seasonal change and
climate change affect the color palette of the plants. Color serves as a
barometer of the systems health. Even a centimeter of topographic change can
affect the coloration and dormancy. Plants weakened by sea level rise are
prone to disease or forced to migrate inland and upland within the
fragmented landscape. Examples of pathogens and galls on drowning salt
marsh plants and examples of species migration are illustrated in the show.

Joseph Ingoldsby?s work blends art, science and technology to advocate for
vanishing landscapes and endangered species. The works are on display at
Mass Audubon?s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary from March 15 to May 15,
2010. A reception and lecture the artist and a naturalist guided walk will
take place at the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday, May 1 from 1
